Blackbutt is a town located in South East Queensland in Australia. Contrary to what this Funny Town Name sounds like upon first hearing, it has nothing to do with the backside of people! If you say that you are from the town of Blackbutt, you might have some people laughing at you, not with you!

It’s one of those words or expressions that mean one thing in one culture, and something completely different in another! And that is even within speakers who talk the same English language!

Actually, Blackbutt is derived from the name of a tree.  The town of Blackbutt is named for the blackbutt trees (species name: Eucalyptus pilularis) that are native to the area. These trees are also called grass trees, as they seem to be a hybrid between these two kinds of plants.

Even though the town name is completely innocent, this hasn’t stopped local businesses and from using the term Blackbutt in a play on words when it comes to their signs!

In fact, this is a art gallery where you can sample some of the region’s wines.
