Coconut Husking and Cracking – The Hard Way!

Coconuts are an essential part of the diet in Fiji.  Being a tropical island area, you will see entire coastlines covered in them, and Coconut fringed beaches are a cliché of paradise!  Like this shot I took! I can’t see any Coconut Husking hard work going on here!

Looks like the true definition of paradise here!

Obviously, Coconut Husking and Coconut Cracking are essential processes to extract the Coconut Milk and Meat for use as food, drink or in cooking.

But at the Arts Village in the Pacific Harbour Region, performers like Husking and Cracking Coconuts with their bare hands! That’s right. No steel tools or anything else that most people need to provide leverage to remove the very tough outer coating of the coconuts. Just hands and fingers to do the job!

Check out this video footage I took at the Arts Village!  It’s crazy! My hands were hurting from just watching this. Coconut Husking is done by smashing the Coconut on a sharp stick.  But they crack the nut by using a karate-like chop!

Here it is. Just so I can keep the lawyers off my back, make sure you don’t try this at home!

Somehow, I don’t think they would be Husking enough to fill this Ox Cart!

So if you want to learn Coconut Husking and Cracking the hard way, go to Fiji and learn from these guys!

Thanks to the Arts Village and Tourism Fiji for providing this great day out!
