The World’s Steepest Street

Posted on 15 April 2009 by anthony

The World’s Steepest Street is Baldwin Street, in Dunedin, New Zealand.

Because the sign says so!

Like any good local council wanting to promote their city, the Dunedin City Council proudly states that this street is officially the ‘Steepest in the World’, and is in the Guinness Book of Records.

Well it is a bit steep.

The average grade of The World’s Steepest Street is 1 in 3.41, with the steepest grade being 1 in 2.86. Check out these photos.

I guess you need good brakes on your car.

If you really want to, you can also claim some dodgy certificates at the bottom of the street that has been set up by some enterprising resident – saying that you’ve walked up and down The World’s Steepest Street.

Other things to do in New Zealand after visiting The World’s Steepest Street – have a steak at the Huntsman Steakhouse.

Weird Sculpture of the Week – Dunedin, New Zealand

Posted on 28 March 2009 by anthony

This Weird Sculpture was spotted in a park at Port Chalmers, north of Dunedin, New Zealand.

I have no idea what this Weird Sculpture means – there were no signs showing any descriptions of what it’s supposed to represent.

If you have any idea, let me know.

Strange.

Nugget Point, New Zealand – Strange Sign of The Week

Posted on 06 March 2009 by anthony

Nugget Point is located near Dunedin, in New Zealand.

It’s a popular place for tourists to check out on the South Island.

Nugget Point is a bit ordinary when it’s pissing down rain and windy, but it’s worth a look.

I enjoyed the walk to and from the lighthouse at Nugget Point, and you can view wildlife such as seals, birds and other wildlife.

However,  on the way to the Nugget Point lighthouse, is this rather ‘stating the obvious sign’.

Watch out, the cliffs at Nugget Point might come out and eat you.

Bizarre Steak House Advertisement – WTF!

Posted on 27 February 2009 by anthony

Steak House.

A vegetarian’s worst nightmare.  Personally, I like a big feed of bovine now and then.

Last week, I went to Dunedin, on the south island of a New Zealand for a small break.

It’s not a bad place to visit – there’s some nice surrounding attractions like seal colonies, albatross nests and rugby stuff, but it sometimes becomes miserable and drizzly and is great weather for ducks.

Anyway, on one of these gloomy days, I was trawling through a free, easily available local magazine.  On Page 4, I came across this fairly standard advertisement for the Huntsmen Steak House.

Yeah, no worries, that’s fair enough.  But I thought it was a bit strange that a much larger, more ‘in your face’ advertisement for the same Steak House appeared on Page 24 of the same publication!

I’ve placed this truly bizarre ad below.  I’m just wondering if anyone notices the Steak?

I was gobsmacked because this Steak House ad appeared in a local guide outlining what’s going on in Dunedin for both locals and visitors – and not in a sealed section of an adult magazine! I wonder if it sells more steaks?

What the F*$%??

If for some reason you are feeling hungry, check out Morton’s Steak Bible: Recipes and Lore from the Legendary Steakhouse.

Strange Tourist Attraction of the Week – The Shoe Fence, near Waihola, New Zealand

Posted on 25 February 2009 by anthony

If you’re ever driving south of Dunedin towards Invercargill on the south island of New Zealand, you might come across this strange tourist attraction – the Shoe Fence.

At first, I thought this was the fence where Imelda Marcos (wife of former Filipino President Ferdinand Marcos, see more here) sent her extensive shoe collection once she had worn them only once.

But you have to be careful – note that there is an electric fence wire running just above the Shoe Fence (see above photo).  So if you’re trying to place a worn out pair of Dunlop Volleys on there, you might receive a large-ish zap.

But apparently, bizarre fence collections like this are not uncommon in New Zealand.

There is a bra fence at a town called Middlemarch, and who knows what else.  Feel free to add your 2 bob worth!

So if you’re after a shoe bargain, this is the fence to visit.  Here is a panoramic shot of what I call, ‘THE IMELDA FENCE’.

Somehow, I don’t think they followed instructions from The Fence Bible: How to plan, install, and build fences and gates to meet every home style and property need, no matter what size your yard.!
