Smoking Area Sign – Don’t Speak in a Big Voice!

Be a share millionaire! Tell the world!

The progressive introduction of anti-tobacco laws have meant those addicted to the cancer sticks are always on the hunt for any designated Smoking Areas they can lay there hands on, where they can have a puff away without annoying the non-smokers out there. That means travelling smokers are finding it harder to find a place in many countries to relax with their favourite brand of ciggies!

But these smoking areas can take on another life of their own, especially when Engrish is involved!

Anyway, this funny travel photo was taken by Neil Skywalker in Kyoto on a trip to Japan.

Neil is also the author of “Around The World In 80 Girls” and he has previously sent me funny travel photos of the rather humourous/disturbing guest hanging area in China, the funny stop smoking sign in Japan and Dr Bong from South Korea.

This sign is an interesting form of Engrish – a bit of mis-spelling combined with a phrase which makes a bit of sense but doesn’t quite hit the mark in terms of it’s intended effectiveness.

Anyway, Neil says ‘I saw the ” No Smorking” sign in a hostel smoking area in Kyoto.

It’s also not allowed to speak in a big voice there :)’

Smoking Area - Big Voice From Kyoto Hostel In Japan

Ahh yes! The signs that don’t translate very well into English!

The sign says that at exactly 23:00, everyone sleeps at that time. And I like the interpretation of not making noise – a ‘big voice’ does tell you somewhat that you shouldn’t talk very loud at a certain time so you don’t annoy the neighbours.
