Deep Sea Fishing – Using Your Own Vomit as Bait!

I had crack at some Deep Sea Fishing for Yellowfin Tuna recently off the coast of Shelly Beach, near Durban in South Africa. I’m not really a big fisherman as such, but I was keen to experience what it was all about.

Unfortunately, the weather was rough as guts, and many of my fellow junket people emptied the contents of their stomach over the side – including myself. However a possible great side effect of this was that we managed to land 5 Yellowfin Tuna into the boat, and yours truly managed to reel in two of them.

It’s hard work trying to haul in almost 10 kg of pure muscle that doesn’t want to end up as dinner on your plate that night when Deep Sea Fishing. But that’s the most enjoyable part – the fight to haul in the tuna.

Our Funny Deep Sea Fishing Skipper!

Martin, our Skipper from Awesome Adventures was good value. He’s been Deep Sea Fishing in these waters for decades and knows his way around these parts. He came up with some priceless one liners such as ‘the best thing to combat sea sickness is to have toast covered in strawberry jam. It doesn’t work, but it tastes nice on the way up!’.

Another favourite was ‘a fisherman is a liar in dirty clothes!’

He also said that the biggest catch of Yellowfin Tuna in one Deep Sea Fishing trip was a total of 83 fish – and the whole boat was chock full of the stuff.

Anyway, check out a short video I put together of Deep Sea Fishing, including a great story Martin told about an unlucky punter who was pulled into the water by a big Zambezi Shark.

Yellowfin Tuna Fishing – is good fun!

There you go, if you’re in Shelly Beach in South Africa, have a crack at some Deep Sea Fishing for Yellowfin Tuna!

What was satisfying about this catch, was that we had sashimi and tuna steaks later on, kindly cooked by Guido at Days At Sea.

By the way, have a look at this complete video of a tuna being filleted. It gives an idea that these fish are just pure muscle and they are very, very hard to haul in!

Looks like a great time, never actually been sea fishing but plan to knock that off before I kick the bucket…haha. I’ve also always stayed clear of sashimi. I don’t know, raw fish just don’t sound appealing. I imagine if I was in the moment on a boat I might just have to complete the experience though.
